Iduna’s Birthday Event
a,k,a. Love Revel

The year is MCDXXII (1422). All Christendom is still nominally catholic, under the aegis of the Holy Roman Empire, but the seeds of its breakup are being sown. Printing has not yet been invented, so all writing continues being done by hand, in variations of the Gothic script. Learned men still know Latin, although vernacular languages are spoken everywhere. France and England continue fighting what will later be called the Hundred Years War. The feudal system continues, although a merchant class is growing. Europe is recovering from the Black Plague. Additional information on this year will be distributed at the Gate. Mistress Iduna wishes to celebrate her recent birthday among friends, at this event on February 12th.
This event will also be our Shire of Stan Wyrm’s annual Love Revel, complete with the choosing of our next Queen of Love and Beauty and her Consort, our annual Arts and Sciences Competition, and the celebration of our Shire’s founding (in A.S. XIX). There will also be armored combat, in a tourney for the honor of Mst. Iduna. Pick-up fights and rapier combat will also be available, as will boardgames. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch as none will be provided, due to Society SCA restrictions. Court will conclude the day’s activities; our Shire Bardic Competition will happen during Court.
The Arts and Sciences Competition will follow modified Kingdom Rules. Documen-tation will be required. Entries are to be set up by 11:00 a.m. Please let our Minister of Arts and Sciences know which Grand Categories you plan to enter, how many items in each, and if you plan to go for Champion, a week ahead. If you plan to enter a writing entry longer than 3 pages, also please let the M.o.A.S. know a week ahead. In order to go for Champion, a minimum of 3 entries are required, representing at least 2 different Grand Categories. For information on the categories and subcategories, go to www.artemisia.sca.org/arts-and-sciences. Items may also be put out solely for display; they must be clearly so marked, and will not be entered in the Competition. A judges’ meeting will be held before the judging begins. Please contact our M.o.A.S. to volunteer to judge.
Merchants are encouraged to attend; please make arrangements with the Event Steward. Please limit your merchandise to 2 tables or the equivalent space, as our indoor space is also needed for the day’s other activities. Classes will be offered throughout the day. So far we have a children’s class on heraldry, a weaving class, one on Medieval boardgames, plus Mistress Caointiarn will share her wisdom on Medieval cooking. If you wish to teach, please contact the Event Steward soon, but no later than January 3rd.
Site will open at 9:00 a.m. and close following late afternoon Court. Following that, we need to clean up the site; volunteers will be greatly appreciated.
